Home Winter Preparation Tips

Ways to Winterize Your Home

The often harsh weather of winter can take a toll on your home both inside and out. At Harris Plumbing, Heating, Air, & Propane, we understand that you want to keep your home warm and cozy on the inside while protecting the outside from winter weather damage.

That's why we are sharing some home winterproofing tips — and they won’t break the bank.

1. Patch up Leaks Around Doors and Windows

In order to keep your home toasty and warm in a way that won't contribute to a sky-high heating bill, you are going to want to check for leaky areas around your home's doors and windows. Even the smallest of gaps can lead to leaks that will make your home drafty and more expensive to keep warm.

For DIY types, you can easily find insulation kits at your local home improvement store. But if you need a little bit more help, our team at Harris PHAP can help.

2. Avoid Unwanted Plumbing Issues by Checking Your Plumbing System

One thing you can guarantee during the winter — frozen pipes. Because of this, you will want to make sure that your plumbing system is examined by a professional technician from Harris Plumbing, Heating, Air & Propane. Plus, it will help prevent a minor plumbing problem from becoming a major one.

Furthermore, make sure you bring in your hoses and keep them in your garage or basement to protect them from the elements. If the pipes in your home have frozen in the past, you may also want to consider covering them with heat tape.

3. Reverse Your Ceiling Fan

Most people know that ceiling fans are a good AC alternative, but did you know that they can also help keep you warm in the winter? When you switch your ceiling fan to spin in the reverse direction, it creates an updraft, moving the warmer air near your ceiling to the lower areas of your home. Once you flip the switch on your ceiling fan, lower your thermostat setting and enjoy the benefits of a warmer home for less money!

4. Don’t Close or Block Your Air Vents

You may have heard from a friend (who heard from a friend, who heard from a friend, and so on...) that closing off your vents and registers will help you save energy, but it’s actually a myth! This will create strain on your HVAC system and will raise your energy bills instead of lowering them since your unit will have to work twice as hard to heat your home. Double check all of your vents in case you accidentally blocked them by drapes, furniture, or rugs.
