A home generator keeps essential systems running when utility power goes out. Depending on the system, backup power can support heating and cooling, refrigeration, lighting, sump pumps, well equipment, medical devices, home offices, and other circuits your household cannot afford to lose.

We provide generator installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance throughout Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Bucks Counties. Our electricians evaluate your electrical system, discuss which parts of the home need backup power, and install equipment sized for the way you plan to use it.

Be Ready Before the Next Outage

Eastern Pennsylvania power outages can result from thunderstorms, high winds, heavy snow, ice, falling branches, vehicle accidents, and problems within the utility system. Homes with overhead lines or mature trees may experience more frequent interruptions, but even newer developments can lose power during a major regional event.

An outage becomes especially disruptive when the home depends on electrical power for:

  • Sump pumps or well pumps

  • Refrigerators and freezers

  • Heating and cooling equipment

  • Medical or mobility equipment

  • Internet and home-office systems

  • Security equipment and essential lighting

A properly planned generator system restores selected circuits or the entire home automatically, depending on the equipment and installation.

Whole-Home Generator Installation

A standby generator is permanently installed outside the home and connected to the electrical system through transfer equipment. When utility power fails, the system detects the outage, starts the generator, and transfers the selected electrical load to backup power.

Generator installation begins with deciding what the system needs to support. Some homeowners want coverage for essential circuits, while others want enough capacity to operate most of the home normally.

We account for the home’s electrical demand, available fuel source, generator location, panel configuration, required clearances, and the equipment expected to operate during an outage. The system is then installed, connected, configured, and tested under simulated outage conditions.

Choosing the Right Generator Capacity

Generator sizing should be based on electrical load rather than the square footage of the home alone. Two similar homes can have very different backup-power needs depending on their appliances, HVAC systems, pumps, and household priorities.

We review the equipment you want to keep operating and determine how much of it may run at the same time. Starting demands from motors and compressors also need to be considered, particularly for air conditioners, heat pumps, refrigerators, well pumps, and sump pumps.

Installing too little capacity can overload the generator. Installing substantially more than the home needs can add unnecessary cost. Our goal is to recommend a system that provides dependable coverage without oversizing the project.

Automatic Transfer Switch Installation

The automatic transfer switch separates the home from utility power before the generator begins supplying electricity. This prevents generator power from feeding back into utility lines and allows the system to switch between utility and backup power safely.

Transfer equipment also determines which circuits or electrical loads receive generator power. Depending on the system design, it may serve selected essential circuits or coordinate backup power through the main electrical service.

Because the generator, transfer switch, and panel must work together, we inspect the existing electrical panel during installation planning.

Generator Repair

A standby generator should be ready to start even if it has not been needed for months. When it fails a routine exercise cycle, displays a warning, leaks, runs unevenly, or does not transfer power correctly, it should be inspected before the next outage.

Our electricians diagnose the generator, starting system, battery, controls, transfer equipment, electrical connections, and visible fuel-related components. We explain what failed and whether a focused repair can return the system to dependable service.

Harris currently provides both generator installation and repair across its service region, with same-day service availability and upfront pricing among its stated service commitments.

Generator Replacement

Replacement may be appropriate when an older generator has become unreliable, major parts are unavailable, or the existing system no longer supports the home’s electrical needs.

A household may also outgrow its generator after adding central air conditioning, a heat pump, finished living space, electric appliances, a well pump, or other high-demand equipment. We reassess the electrical load rather than assuming the original generator size is still suitable.

When replacement is recommended, we evaluate whether the existing transfer equipment, wiring, pad, and connections can remain or must be updated with the new system.

Generator Maintenance

Standby generators require ongoing maintenance even when utility service has remained reliable. Batteries weaken, filters and fluids age, connections can loosen, and insects or debris may affect equipment that sits outdoors year-round.

Generator maintenance typically includes an operating check, inspection of accessible components, battery evaluation, review of system alerts, and confirmation that the transfer equipment responds correctly. Service needs vary by generator model, fuel type, operating hours, and manufacturer guidance.

Regular maintenance gives us the opportunity to correct developing problems before the system is asked to carry the home during an actual outage.

Backup Power and Your Electrical System

Installing a generator may reveal other electrical work that should be addressed as part of the project. An older panel may lack appropriate capacity or compatible space for the required transfer equipment. Grounding, service connections, or existing circuit conditions may also need correction.

We keep those recommendations tied to the installation rather than assuming every home needs a full electrical upgrade. When broader concerns are present, an electrical inspection can evaluate the panel, grounding, wiring, and connected equipment before the generator project moves forward.

Whole-home surge protection may also complement a backup-power system by helping protect sensitive electrical equipment from voltage spikes when utility power is interrupted or restored.

Had Harris out to do an assessment on my heater and the technician Chris found a dangerous situation with my heater exchanger that could have slowly put carbon monoxide into my house. I’m grateful that Lee was able to come to the house right away and provide me selections and options. I was able to get a new HVAC system the next day and my family can safely sleep in our home. Everyone from Mathew and Chris M to Lee and the install guys, Louis, Mike and Jhar were amazing and genuinely great people I would have in my home any time.

I was quite satisfied with meeting with Josh, yesterday. While I didn't care for the price, I had to expect things would be that high of a cost. Still, Josh's professional conduct while he was inspecting my tank made it that much easier to say, "yes," and go ahead with the installation request. I am not concerned, at this point, about the job itself. The heater installation, earlier this year was very nicely done and the unit is working great.

The technician first of all was polite, he put his booties on. And I appreciate that because I have hardwood floors original. The technician looked at the situation was able to fix the issue and showed me what can be another possible problem if not addressed.

Requested same day service in the AM and Scott was at the house by 3:00. He was very knowledgeable and professional, making sure that he understood what I wanted regarding the outdoor outlet and the line to it. He worked quickly and left the patio cleaner than when he arrived. I would highly recommend Harris for electrical work.
